Congested crossings

December 19, 2009

Many of our local railroad crossings are located close to traffic lights. I remember seeing a van full of schoolchildren straddling the railroad track in a line of traffic at the stop light on Cary Parkway and Old Apex Road. It seems to be a common practice as traffic congestion increases in our area.

There needs to be a longer time between the warning bells and the lowering of gates, thereby allowing any vehicle carelessly stopped on the tracks time enough for a move to safety. Also, improved warning signs need posting - even though most of us show proper respect for this hazard.
