CHARLOTTE -- The White House has nominated a Charlotte lawyer to serve as the top federal prosecutor in North Carolina's western district.

President Barack Obama nominated Anne Tompkins on Thursday. She was an assistant U.S. attorney from 2000 to 2005 and spent part of that time in Baghdad helping an Iraqi tribunal prepare criminal cases against Saddam Hussein.

Tompkins has worked at the Alston & Bird law firm since 2005, focusing on white collar criminal defense and internal corporate investigations.

Last month, Obama nominated Thomas G. Walker, a partner at Alston & Bird, to be the U.S. attorney for the state's eastern district.

Sen. Kay Hagan had recommended Tompkins as a candidate along with lawyer Peter Anderson and Judge Danny Davis. Hagan said Thursday that Tompkins is "incredibly qualified" for the position.
