RALEIGH -- Police are searching for suspects after someone broke into three vehicles parked at a West Raleigh motel and stole a necklace, toaster oven and many other Christmas presents.

The vehicles were parked at the La Quinta Inn on Summit Park Lane near Crabtree Valley Mall, police said. The windows were smashed, and investigators believe the break-ins happened sometime between Wednesday night and Thursday morning. Some of the items taken: a gun, a GPS system, a sweater, Craftsman tools, a bracelet, a toaster oven and a necklace bought for one of the victims' wives.

Larry Cranford of Wilmington said he had purchased gifts for his grown children and granddaughter in Rolesville, and he left them covered by a blanket in the front seat of his locked pickup, which was parked under a street light. He estimated the loss at $1,000, which he hoped his insurance would cover. "Tomorrow, I'm just going to write the kids some checks," he said.

He said he got one holiday bonus: La Quinta gave him the room free.
