It seems to me that the only reason Sen. Marc Basnight and the state want Internet gaming outlawed is because they aren't in on the deal (news story, Dec. 23). The state wants to make sure it is the only one that will profit from getting us drunk (ABC) and making us broke (lottery). It is beyond comical for either Basnight or State Rep. Melanie Wade Goodwin to act as if they are against a social illness here when the state created the largest one out there called the lottery.

I believe it was Ronald Reagan who said one of the most frightening statements he ever heard was "I'm with the government, and I'm here to help."

J.D. Howard, Raleigh
