In the front-page article "Baby's rally sparks joy" (Dec. 21), it was touted as a miracle that the severely ill baby responded, including opening her eyes and sticking out her tongue, after having been surrounded by people speaking in tongues. In fact, sticking out one's tongue is simply a rational response to such absurdity. It was heartening, then, to get to page 1B and read "The Son and the sun: different reasons to be happy this season," and to learn about the work of the Triangle Freethought Society to promote reason and understanding of the origin of our superstitions.
It is people who have gone beyond relying on miracles, by using scientific reasoning, that have led to the medical advancements which are actually keeping baby Christiana alive, as she is still fed through a gastric feeding tube. During this holiday season as people remember the miracle of a virgin birth, I hope people will also take a few moments to be thankful for those who have moved past miracles in order to bring us the advancements of medical science that truly give us life.
