In the glittering galaxy of Triangle area music stars, few shine as brightly as guitarist and songwriter Danny Gotham. "Old Friends" is the talented Chapel Hillian's long-awaited follow-up to his 2004 CD, "Luzerne."
For Gotham, an "old friend" signifies the riches of a good melody or lyric, or an instrument used to make music. They all come together in these 16 tracks performed flawlessly and lovingly by Gotham on an array of instruments including guitar, mandolin, banjo, bass, Dobro, organ and uke.
An artist of eclectic interests, Gotham draws on sources ranging from 1920s Grand Ole Opry star Uncle Dave Macon ("Old Ties") through 1960s folkies John Hartford ("Tall Buildings") and Donovan Leitch ("Colors"), and rockers Jimi Hendrix ("Little Wing") and Duane Allman ("Little Martha"). He indulges his classical leanings with a reflective stroll through Francisco Tarrega's "Recuerdos de la Alhambra."
