Three Duke University football players have been charged with felony possession and discharge of a weapon after gunshots were fired early Sunday morning near a residence hall on East Campus, Duke officials said.

The three freshmen - John Drew, Kyle Griswould and Brandon Putnam - were dismissed from the team after their arrest by campus police. They were removed from campus and won't be allowed to return until the charges are resolved. No one was injured in the 3 a.m. incident.

"Obviously, we take this very seriously," Duke spokesman Michael Schoenfeld said.

Campus police recovered the gun.
