For months, a federal grand jury has been investigating the actions of former Gov. Mike Easley and those close to him. Thursday's indictment of Ruffin Poole contained the first charges from the probe.
Poole, sometimes called the "little governor," previously had resigned from the Golden Leaf Commission and left the law firm McGuireWoods late last year after refusing to testify before the state Board of Elections. The Board of Elections conducted a separate investigation into Easley's campaign financing.
