Duke junior guard Nolan Smith is from Upper Marlboro, Md., but his homecoming wasn't the cause for celebration that it could have been.
Smith's maternal grandfather, Freddie Miller, died earlier in the week. Smith will leave the team to attend the funeral in Louisville on Monday but said his personal loss didn't affect him on the court.
"Everything off the court that happened, I put it behind me," Smith said. "So when it comes time for the game, it's my responsibility as a leader on this team to be ready."
Although Smith led Duke with 19 points, he scored only three in the first half, and many of his points came after the outcome of the game had been decided.
An inadvertent elbow from Florida State center Solomon Alabi on Wednesday left Duke forward Lance Thomas groggy afterward but didn't seem to affect him Saturday.
Thomas missed some practice after the injury but scored eight points and grabbed five rebounds against Georgetown.
The ability of Georgetown's big men to handle the ball far away from the basket kept 7-foot-1 Duke senior Brian Zoubek out of the game plan.
Zoubek, who was averaging 15.8 minutes per game, played a season-low two minutes and had just two fouls and a turnover to show for it.
