Two soldiers based at Fort Bragg were killed in Afghanistan on Friday, the Defense Department announced Tuesday.

Capt. David J. Thompson of Hooker, Okla., and Spc. Marc P. Decoteau of Waterville Valley, N.H., died in Wardak province in support of combat operations, the Defense Department said.

Thompson, 39, was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group, while Decoteau, 19, was assigned to the 6th Psychological Operations Battalion, 4th Psychological Operations Group.

The Defense Department did not disclose how Thompson and Decoteau were killed, but Reuters and other news services reported that an Afghan interpreter shot and killed two U.S. soldiers in Wardak province Friday. The reports indicated that the attacker appeared to be a disgruntled employee rather than a militant.
