HILLSBOROUGH -- The Hillsborough police chief filed to run for Orange County sheriff Monday, setting the stage for a possible run against one of the state's longest-serving lawmen.

Clarence Birkhead, 49, a former Duke University police chief, has been the head of Hillsborough's department since 2005.

Sheriff Lindy Pendergass, first elected in 1982, could not be reached to see whether he's running.
