A pastor's place

A Jan. 30 letter criticized Nancy Petty's Jan. 29 Point of View piece about Wake County schools by saying that she is idealistic but not realistic. The writer thought that she should have proposed concrete solutions.

Rev. Petty is a pastor, not a professional educator. Her job is to lead us through moral dilemmas and to inspire us to become involved in our community's problems. Her mission as a pastor is to direct us to take an interest in the problems surrounding our city and world.

Petty is not trained to design public education solutions but to urge those who can to do so. Her Point of View reflected Carl Schurz's astute quote, "Ideals are like stars; you will not succeed in touching them with your hands. But like the seafaring man on the desert of waters, you choose them as your guides, and following them you will reach your destiny."
