Raleigh's Untouchables won the National Hoops Ministries three-on-three junior varsity tournament last week during NBA All-Star Week festivities in Dallas.

The team is made up Sha'Qua Davis, Stradford Barnett and J.R. Soto, who played on the Sanderson junior varsity this season, and Dashawna Smith, who started on the Sanderson girls varsity.

The Untouchables defeated LTG Fam from Denver 26-6 and 20-12 in the best-of-three national championship series and then added a 24-10 win in an extra game.

The team met and had pictures made with NBA players such as Carmelo Anthony and Kobe Bryant. The players attended the NBA rookie game, dunking contest and the All-Star Game. They also were staying next door to the Minnesota Vikings' Adrian Peterson in the hotel and met him.

"It was just amazing really," Davis said. "It was more than I could have imagined."

The team qualified for the Eastern regionals by winning a tournament at Catawba Springs Christian Church near Apex and then won the regional in South Carolina to earn the berth in the title game.

Cary falls in finals: Cary's string of dual-team wrestling championships came to a quick end Sunday when Winston-Salem Parkland took a 38-14 victory in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4-A dual-team championships.

Cary had won the past three dual-team 4-A titles, but Parkland had won the past three 3-A dual-team championships before being reclassified this year as a 4-A school.

"Any time you beat a team with 20 state championships, you've done something pretty great," Parkland coach Ronnie Sigmon said. "And this victory demonstrates that 3-A wrestling in this state is just as good as 4-A."

Cary entered the match with a perfect 34-0 record, having breezed through the dual-team competition with four lopsided wins. The closest match was a 53-18 rout of Hope Mills South View in the third round.

But according to coach Jerry Winterton, his team's performance in the championship wasn't quite at the level those surrounding the Cary program have come to expect.

"Parkland's got a strong team, but we didn't wrestle our best," Winterton said. "We lost some tight matches where maybe we could've won had we wrestled a little better, but I give credit to them. Even if we get some of those close ones, it doesn't make up the point difference."

Despite the disappointing ending to the dual season, Winterton praised his team for being resilient and fighting to the end against a level of competition it hadn't seen all year.

"I'm proud of our guys for the way they handled the adversity in this match," Winterton said. "This really is a good group of kids."

The NCHSAA individual wrestling regionals are scheduled for Friday and Saturday.

Conference tournaments: The Tri-Nine 4-A began its boys and girls league tournaments Monday night with play-in games between the Cary girls and Lee County and the Fuquay-Varina boys and Green Hope. First-round games are scheduled for tonight at the higher seeds. The semifinals are Wednesday at Panther Creek. The championship games are Friday at Panther Creek.

The Cap Seven 4-A plays its first-round games today at the higher seeds. Enloe, Wakefield, Millbrook and Broughton shared the regular-season title, but Enloe is the top-seeded girls team and has a first-round bye. Millbrook and Enloe shared the boys title, but Millbrook got the first-round bye.

The semifinals and finals are at Broughton. The girls semifinals are on Wednesday and the boys are on Thursday. The finals are Friday night.

The pairings for the Greater Neuse River 4-A are scheduled to be made this morning. Garner and Knightdale will be the home schools today at 6 and 7:30 for boys games. The girls first round also will be today at the same times at Southeast Raleigh and Clayton.

The Ravenscroft boys finished 6-0 in the Triangle Independent School Athletic Conference while the other three league teams were 2-4. The tournament will be played Thursday and Friday at Ravenscroft.

Carolinas 3-A canceled its tournament in order to complete the regular season.

DA scoring record: Jordan Lawson broke the Durham Academy career scoring record Saturday night in a 64-59 victory over North Raleigh Academy. Lawson had 25 points and 16 rebounds in the victory. Lawson now has 1,383 points in his career, 12 more than Jamie Gutter, who graduated in 2007.

Ryan Nagy, who is No. 2 among area boys scorers with 22.4 points per game, had 23 points in the loss.
