Wolfpack goes cold against Terps

N.C. State loses seventh straight

— The BassPack, N.C. State's bass fishing team, received a standing ovation during a timeout in the second half of N.C. State's basketball game with Maryland on Wednesday night.

It has come to that for the Wolfpack, success in a fringe club sport is all its fan base has to cheer. The basketball team hasn't offered many opportunities in a lost season and didn't again in a predictable 67-58 loss to the weary Terrapins on Wednesday.

The Wolfpack dropped its seventh straight ACC game and seventh straight to the Terps. Maryland senior Greivis Vasquez, as usual, played the villain, pouring in 26 points and leading a decisive 22-5 run in the second half.

Wolfpack freshman Scott Wood called it an "all-time low" after State frittered away a 10-point, second-half lead.

"I think I need to go to therapy," Wood said.

It's not just the losses that are frustrating coach Sidney Lowe but the way State loses. The Pack looked strong in the first half, pressuring on defense, scoring in transition and getting balanced scoring from Wood, Dennis Horner and Farnold Degand.

Then it turned around in the second half and did the complete opposite against a Maryland team playing for the third time in five days.

"Two totally different halves," Lowe said. "Why can we do it in the first half? Then in the second half, each guy wants to do something else."

State led 37-27 at the half and 46-36 at 14:50 in the second half. Then the bottom fell out. Maryland scored the next nine points, interrupted by a five-point spurt by Horner, who finished with a team-best 19 points and 10 rebounds.

After Horner's 3-pointer made it 51-45 at 9:53, State didn't score for more than six minutes. Vasquez handled the rest, with an assist from freshman forward Jordan Williams.

Vasquez's 3 at 8:19 put the Terps up for good, 53-51. The Maryland senior turned and shot a look at the N.C. State crowd after his shot fell through the net. If looks could kill, that one did in the Wolfpack's morale.

"It was a tough shot, and he made it," Lowe said. "The great players do that."

State's recent shooting woes continued, going 23-of-66 (34.8 percent), and couldn't overcome an off night (10 points) from Tracy Smith, who had only eight shots.

"They were trying to make everybody else score except me," said Smith, who finished 3-of-8.

State's supporting cast, other than Horner, couldn't. After each scoring seven points in the first half, Wood and Degand only managed two points each in the second. Starting point guard Javier Gonzalez finished with no points and missed all five shots in 22 minutes.

"If I had my choice, I would be more than happy to give [Smith] all of my shots," Wood said. "He's the best player. He'll make a ton of money some day. We just have to get him the ball. If we get him the ball on the block, I don't think he can take a bad shot."

Wood then summed up the entire evening.

"We did in the first half, but we failed to do anything right in the second half," the freshman said.
