DURHAM -- A woman was struck and killed as she crossed Fayetteville Street on Thursday, and police cited the driver of the car that hit her with several charges, including driving while impaired.

Brendan Duan Bass, 21, of Alhambra Court was driving an Oldsmobile Cutlass south on Fayetteville near Burlington Avenue about 8:30 p.m. when the accident occurred, according to Durham police.

The woman, Vickie Elaine Riley, 48, of Nash Street was in the left southbound lane when the collision occurred. Riley died at the scene.

After hitting Riley, the Cutlass struck a Mercury Mountaineer SUV in the right lane. The Cutlass jumped a curb, struck a sign, went through a chain-link fence and hit a parked car. Bass and the driver of the Mountaineer did not suffer serious injuries.

Bass was arrested and charged with driving while impaired, driving without a license, having no insurance and using fictitious tags. Bass was also arrested on an outstanding warrant charging him with robbery with a dangerous weapon on March 30, 2009.
