Kansas

Is there an "Ol' Roy Rule of Reciprocity?" Every time the North Carolina coach wins a national title, Kansas does, too. At least the Rock Chalkers hope so.

In Cole Aldrich, Sherron Collins and Xavier Henry, Jayhawks coach Bill Self certainly has the talent to match his predecessor's ring count.

Butler

The Bulldogs, 17-0 in the Horizon League, are one of four teams nationally who remain unbeaten in conference play. If this year is indeed 2006 all over again - wide open, an unpredictable bracket with one Final Four long shot - here's the next George Mason.

Virginia

Since a 5-2 start, Jerome Meyinsse and Sammy Zeglinski have turned back into pumpkins, and Sylven Landes-berg is scrubbing floors for the 5-6 Wahoos. It turns out that rookie coach Tony Bennett is merely good, not a miracle worker.

Mississippi State

Stay classy, Starkville. Kudos to intrepid Bulldogs fans for unearthing Kentucky freshman DeMarcus Cousins' cell phone number and posting it on a message board, but, of course, some had to take it too far. Cousins said that of the hundred-plus voice and text messages he received, several included racial slurs.

Less isn't more

When referee John Cahill injured his hamstring early in North Carolina's loss to Georgia Tech on Tuesday night, Bryan Kersey and Gary Maxwell worked the remainder of the game as a duo.

(Side note: UConn, which has a 1-5 record with Cahill on the court this season, including a dubious timeout at the end of a five-point loss at Syracuse on Feb. 10, only wishes it could get so lucky.)

Kersey and Maxwell worked the Georgia Tech blowout without incident, but it was clear, by the speed of the game, why the NCAA upgraded to three-man crews.

Be careful what you wish for

After UNC's 15-point home loss to Virginia on Jan. 31, Tar Heels coach Roy Williams asked, "How can it be any worse than it is right now?"

Well, since then the Tar Heels have lost their best player, Ed Davis, for the season because of a wrist injury, one of the Wear brothers (Travis) to an ankle injury and every game not against N.C. State.
