Despite the outcome of Sunday's game, Virginia Tech's Seth Greenberg has become one of the leading candidates for ACC coach of the year. The Hokies were picked to finish seventh in the ACC preseason media poll but entered the weekend tied for second place with a five-game winning streak. Shooting guard Dorenzo Hudson and forward Victor Davila have shown significant improvement this season under Greenberg.
Greenberg probably would have traded all the awards he's won, though, for a push-off call on Jon Scheyer on a rebound that led to a Nolan Smith 3-pointer in the first half in front of the Hokies' bench.
In more colorful language, Greenberg called the non-call a "joke" as he stood in front of his bench.
Veteran referee John Cahill returned to the ACC rotation on Sunday night after suffering a hamstring injury that forced North Carolina and Georgia Tech to play most of Tuesday night's game with just two officials.
Cahill also officiated a Big East game last week after getting hurt in Atlanta.
Duke senior center Brian Zoubek made his third straight start and was a factor throughout the game, although he scored only three points. He grabbed 16 rebounds, eight on offense. "He's a mountain masquerading as a man," Greenberg said of Zoubek, who is 7-foot-1.
Virginia Tech's early foul trouble forced reserve Ben Boggs to guard Jon Scheyer on a few first-half possessions. No offense to Boggs, who's a scrappy player, but that's a mismatch, and Scheyer took advantage of it immediately to get fouled on a drive.
