West Charlotte running back Jalen "Scoot" Simmons has committed to play football at Duke, his father Donald said Monday.

Simmons, a 5-foot-9, 200-pound junior, was among a group of the nation's top junior players invited to the U.S. Army All-American Game last month for an athletic combine. Simmons has 4.5-second speed in the 40-yard dash.

"We're really excited," Donald Simmons said. "When we went up there and visited, he said he was ready to commit. He's always liked Duke, and he wanted to play in the ACC. I thought he was going to take a little more time before he made his decision, but he was ready."

Basketball

Magee set to pass Knight: Philadelphia University basketball coach Herb Magee is one victory away from becoming the winningest coach in NCAA history.

Magee is tied with former Indiana coach Bob Knight at 902 victories. Magee is 902-352 in 43 years at the Division II school and can surpass Knight (902-371) today when the Rams play Goldey-Beacom College.

Magee led the program to a national championship in 1970. Knight and Magee are tied in the career wins list for coaches who spent their entire career at the NCAA level.

Northern (S.D.) State coach Don Meyer, who announced his retirement Monday, has 922 victories between the NAIA and NCAA.

Magee says he'll be glad when the moment passes so the focus can return to the Rams' bid to reach the NCAA Tournament.

ACC honors: Maryland's Greivis Vasquez and Georgia Tech's Derrick Favors earned league weekly honors.

Vasquez was named player of the week for the third time this season. He averaged nearly 25 points, six assists and six rebounds in wins over Virginia, N.C. State and Georgia Tech.

Favors was named rookie of the week for the fourth time this season. He averaged 17 points in two games.

Women's honors went to Florida State senior forward Jacinta Monroe (player) and N.C. State freshman guard Marissa Kastanek (rookie).

Kastanek continued to play well for the Pack, which went 2-0 against league Boston College and North Carolina.

Texas loses point guard: Texas point guard Dogus Balbay will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL in his left knee.

Balbay played in all 27 games and made 22 starts. He was averaging a team-high 3.9 assists along with 3.8 points and 3.2 rebounds.

Football

Harris to participate in drills: Miami quarterback Jacory Harris will participate in some non-throwing drills during spring practice as he continues to recover from surgery on his throwing hand.

Coach Randy Shannon says that when the Hurricanes open the spring season today, most of the throws will be handled by returning backup quarterback A.J. Highsmith and incoming freshman Stephen Morris.

Baseball

Pack's Poulk honored: N.C. State second baseman Dallas Poulk has been selected the first ACC baseball player of the week of the 2010 season, while Georgia Tech sophomore Jed Bradley has been named the conference's Pitcher of the Week.

Poulk, a senior from Fayetteville, drove in 10 runs in the Wolfpack's three-game, season-opening sweep of La Salle after driving in a total of 23 all of last season. The Wolfpack's 65 total runs set a school record for a three-game series.

Poulk finished the weekend with a slugging percentage of 1.182 and an on-base percentage of .667.

Bradley had a career-high 12 strikeouts in six innings in a 13-0 win over Missouri State.
