The battle to stop Titan Cement from locating to our beloved coast gains momentum daily. New Hanover County commissioners have received a petition from nearly 6,000 people who oppose Titan. As we learn more, opposition grows.

Those fighting Titan sometimes are dismissed as tree huggers and accused of hijacking the area's economic development, but that is not true. We do want growth, but we want government to use incentives like the $4.2 million promised Titan to attract green jobs and businesses that pose no threat to tourism or our air and water. We do not want toxins added to an already compromised Cape Fear River and surrounding area and aquifer.

This struggle has snowballed locally and statewide and includes the Southern Environmental Law Center, N.C. Coastal Federation and Friends of the Lower Cape Fear. We want Gov. Beverly Perdue to freeze all permits until the SBI completes its investigation of possible corruption and until the courts have decided whether the State Environmental Policy Act should apply to Titan's incentives. The health and future of an entire region are at stake.
