Public schools in Wake, Durham, Orange and Johnston counties are on a two-hour delay this morning because of the dusting of snow that fell on the Triangle overnight. Chatham County schools are closed. Chapel Hill-Carrboro schools are on a regular schedule.
Schools in Harnett and Lee county are closed, and Franklin County schools are delayed two hours. The Chapel Hill-Carrboro system has not made an announcement on its plans. Classes at Wake Technical Community College will be delayed until 10 a.m.
Wake County schools will proceed with their regularly scheduled one-hour early dismissal. But the usual early Wednesday release in Orange County has been canceled; school will end at the normal weekday time there.
More closings and delays are at the bottom of this story.
A burst of moderate snow from the late-winter storm left between an inch and two inches of accumulation in most parts of the Triangle after midnight before moving out. The temperature in most areas stayed above freezing most of the night.
Some amounts were heavier just to the south and southwest of Raleigh. Parts of Lee County reported six inches of snow on grassy areas.
More than three inches of snow fell in Sanford overnight, covering streets in a thick slush and forcing the cancellation of school. The wet, heavy snow broke tree branches and pushed shrubs to the ground.
By 8 a.m., however, the clouds began to part. In the bright sun, hunks of snow tumbled down from treetops.
Roads are wet and slushy this morning but passable. Motorists are advised to use caution.
Most of the snow that fell will disappear rapidly as the temperature climbs into the low 40s by midday. Skies will remain cloudy most of the day.
High temperatures will climb into the 50s by Friday, and a springlike weekend is in store, with sunshine and highs of 60 or better.
