GREENSBORO -- Stefanie Murphy had 18 points to lead Boston College past Virginia Tech 62-49 on Thursday night in the first round of the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament.
Brittany Johnson added 10 points for the seventh-seeded Eagles (16-14). They never trailed, shot 40 percent and outrebounded Tech 37-32 to advance to a quarterfinal matchup against eighth-ranked and No. 2 seed Florida State.
Nikki Davis had 10 points for the 10th-seeded Hokies (15-15). They forced 16 turnovers but were on the receiving end of one of the most lopsided first-round losses in ACC tournament history. In going one-and-done for the third straight year, they've lost four consecutive ACC tournament games.
Murphy had 22 points 1½ weeks ago in a 69-64 loss to the Hokies, and she and the Eagles avenged that defeat by locking down on two of their top scoring threats.
Brittany Gordon, who had 14 points and 11 rebounds in that victory, was just 1-for-1 from the field in this one and finished with six points while Utahya Drye, who is averaging a team-best 11.4 points, finished with eight on 3-of-14 shooting.
Still, for a while Drye threatened to help the Hokies make a game of it. All three of her field goals came in a span of 1:51, cutting the deficit to 34-27 with 14:50 to play.
Murphy followed with the first of two baskets in the span of a minute, Jasmine Gill knocked down a jumper and Ayla Brown hit a 3 from the key to make it 43-32 with 12 minutes left. The Hokies didn't get closer than nine the rest of the way, and Johnson's 3 with about 4½ minutes left stretched the lead to 20.
The Eagles, who won their tournament opener for the third straight year, jumped on the Hokies quickly. They opened the game with a methodical 22-6 run, then pushed the lead to 17 when Kelsey Reynolds' 3-pointer made it 25-8 with 6½ minutes left.
Virginia Tech missed 19 of its first 23 attempts from the field, and didn't hit its first jump shot until Davis countered Reynolds' 3 with one of her own with 6:16 left.
