Boston Bruins center Marc Savard has been diagnosed with a grade two concussion after being leveled by a blindside hit by the Pittsburgh Penguins' Matt Cooke during a game Sunday.

General manager Peter Chiarelli said Monday that team doctor Peter Asnis and a concussion specialist at Massachusetts General Hospital evaluated and diagnosed Savard.

The Bruins medical staff will continue to monitor and evaluate Savard for up to five days before they offer an update on his prognosis.

Savard had just taken a shot from above the circles when Cooke came from behind, raised his shoulder and struck Savard in the head. Savard was prone on the ice for several minutes before being carried off.

Bruins coach Claude Julien said after the game he considered it a "dirty hit." No penalty was called.

Capitals' Aucoin signs extension: Center Keith Aucoin has signed a two-year contract extension with the Washington Capitals.

Aucoin, a former Carolina Hurricane, is in the minors with the Hershey Bears, leading the AHL in scoring with 84 points - 31 goals and 53 assists.

He helped lead Hershey to the AHL championship last season.

The 5-foot-9, 162-pound player has three goals and eight assists in 21 games for the Capitals the past two seasons. He has played in nine games for Washington this season.

The extension was announced by the Capitals before their game against the Dallas Stars on Monday night.
