The 20-year-old Ping wedges with square-shaped grooves no longer will be allowed on the PGA Tour starting March 29 under an agreement reached Monday with Ping executives.

John Solheim, the chairman and CEO of Ping, said the Phoenix-based company is waiving its right that had kept the PGA Tour from banning Ping Eye2 wedges made before April 1, 1990, that have deeper, wide grooves no longer allowed under new USGA regulations.

McNabb, Owens team up

Donovan McNabb will be throwing passes to Terrell Owens again - on a basketball court, not a football field - in the new season of Spike TV's "Pros vs. Joes." The episode features NFL players who played college basketball against former NBA stars.

McNabb (Syracuse), Owens (Tennessee-Chattanooga) and Antonio Gates (Kent State) will face Hakeem Olajuwon (Houston) and former North Carolina players Kenny Smith and Rick Fox.

Roethlisberger investigation: A high-profile defense attorney hired by Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger disputed a college student's claim that the two-time Super Bowl winner sexually assaulted her at a Georgia nightclub.

The 20-year-old told Milledgeville, Ga., police that Roethlisberger, who had been out barhopping with friends, assaulted her early Friday. Roethlisberger has not been charged.

Kristine Lilly, who has not played for the United States since December 2008, is among 24 women selected for a training camp ahead of exhibition soccer matches against Mexico on March 28 at San Diego and March 31 at Sandy, Utah.

Five former North Carolina players were invited to the camp: Yael Averbuch, Whitney Engen, Casey Nogueira, Heather O'Reilly and Cat Whitehill.

Canadian takes Iditarod lead

Sebastian Schnuelle of Canada regained the early lead in Alaska's 1,100-mile Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race on Monday afternoon when he became the first musher to leave the Rainy Pass checkpoint, about 224 miles beyond Anchorage.

Lance Mackey is trying for his fourth consecutive win in the race, which started Sunday.

RailHawks add 2 coaches

Carolina RailHawks coach Martin Rennie has added two Triangle-based assistant coaches to his staff for this season.

Carson Porter, an assistant at Wake Forest from 2004 to 2009, will work mostly with forwards, and Dewan Bader, a former N.C. State standout who is the director of coaching for the Triangle Futbol Club youth organization, will oversee the midfielders.

N.C. State official will speak

Michelle Lee, N.C. State's associate athletic director for compliance, will be the guest speaker Wednesday at the Raleigh Sports Club's weekly lunch meeting, and Athens Drive golfer Katherine Perry will be honored as the high school athlete of the week. The Athens Drive golf team has won consecutive N.C. High School Athletic Association 4-A team championships.

The noon meeting will be held at Highland United Methodist Church on the corner of Ridge Road and Lake Boone Trail at 1901 Ridge Road.

The cost is $14 for members and $20 for nonmembers. Learn more at www.raleighsportsclub.org.
