CARY -- A 2-year-old boy is in critical condition after falling 14 feet from a window onto a concrete sidewalk, an official said.

The boy was at home in his family's apartment at 1011 Village Greenway with his mother and aunt about 5 p.m. Tuesday. The women got up from the couch to tend to an infant when the boy jumped on the couch that was against an open window. He then leaned against the window, which was open but had a screen, said Carrie Roman, a spokeswoman for the town of Cary.

He fell onto a sidewalk face first, she said. He has facial lacerations and a cracked skull, Roman said. He is listed in critical but stable condition at WakeMed hospital.

"They think he will be fine," Roman said.

The incident is still under investigation, but police are considering it accidental, Roman said.
