From staff reports

Raleigh police are trying to determine if there's a link between the assault on Kathy Taft on Saturday and an attempted break-in reported a block away that evening.

Taft was found badly injured in the home of a friend on Cartier Drive, off Oberlin Road, late Saturday morning and later died of her injuries.

The attempted break-in was reported on Wayland Drive on Saturday evening, when a resident returned home and found signs that someone had tried to get into her house. It's not clear when the attempted break-in occurred.

Meanwhile, Wake County District Attorney Colin Willoughby has asked a judge to seal public documents related to the Taft investigation, which could include search warrants and the tapes and transcripts of any 911 calls.

Taft, a member of the state Board of Education, died Tuesday. Police are treating her death as a homicide, but have not named any suspects and have released very little information about their investigation.

Willoughby's wife, Patricia Willoughby, also serves on the state Board of Education.
