Nomar Garciaparra rejoined the Red Sox for one day and then retired, ending a 14-year career in which he won two batting titles with Boston and was once a beloved player in the city.

The shortstop signed a one-day contract with his former team Wednesday before announcing he's leaving baseball at 36 to become an ESPN analyst.

Garciaparra played parts of nine seasons in Boston. He was a six-time All-Star who captured the 1997 American League Rookie of the Year Award and won batting crowns in 1999 and 2000.

Tomlinson, Vikings to meet

LaDainian Tomlinson is scheduled to meet with coach Brad Childress and other members of the organization today. The 2006 NFL MVP was released by the San Diego Chargers last month after the least-productive season of his prolific nine-year career.

Skins sign ex-Panther: Free-agent nose tackle Maake Kemoeatu signed a two-year, $6.975 million contract with the Washington Redskins on Wednesday. The 6-foot-5, 345-pound Kemoeatu spent last season on injured reserve with the Carolina Panthers after tearing his Achilles' tendon in training camp.

The Tennessee Titans have agreed to a three-year contract with Will Witherspoon as they revamp their linebacking corps.

Antonio Bryant's agent said the receiver and the Cincinnati Bengals were "very close" to an agreement Wednesday, a move that would likely preclude the addition of Terrell Owens.

Horse breeder guilty of cruelty

Prominent New York thoroughbred breeder and owner Ernie Paragallo was convicted Wednesday of mistreating dozens of malnourished horses on his Hudson Valley farm. A judge convicted Paragallo on 33 of 34 misdemeanor animal cruelty counts in a nonjury trial in Greene County.

The 52-year-old Long Island resident was charged after state police and animal welfare investigators raided his farm in Coxsackie in April and seized 177 malnourished horses. He could face up to two years in jail and $35,000 in fines.

Vonn settles for second place

Lindsey Vonn finished second to Maria Riesch of Germany in the final downhill of the season Wednesday in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, failing to clinch the World Cup overall title but maintaining a huge lead with three races to go.
