CARY -- A Cary police officer crashed his police car into a home Wednesday night after he lost control trying to catch up to a speeding driver.

Senior Police Officer Mike Smith was sitting in his car around 11:30 p.m. with a radar gun and clocked a driver speeding. He turned his car around to catch up to the speeder, according to Deputy Chief Barry Nickalson.

The road was wet, and Smith's wheels spun, Nickalson said. He lost control at SW Maynard Road and Pond Street. The car drove into the yard and hit the house at 1101 Pond St. The house was unoccupied at the time, Nickalson said.

Smith sustained lacerations to the left side of his face and also suffered a concussion. He was released from the hospital early this morning and is resting at home, Nickalson said.

The home has a hole in its foundation and has been declared uninhabitable, Nickalson said.
