No. 12 seed

Only Joe Namath has done more for the No. 12. The lucky one-two is 4-1 against the No. 5 seed in the ACC tournament since expansion. The Hurricanes own half of those wins.

Actually, Miami coach Frank Haith is "Mr. 5-12." His fifth-seeded Canes beat No. 12 N.C. State in 2007.

Yellow Jackets squeak by

The Yellow Jackets got out of the first round, barely, with Thursday's win over a wobbly North Carolina team. They have eight ACC wins this season, but three are over the Tar Heels. Is that really enough to get into the NCAA tournament? Can't wait until they until they expand the field to 96.

Upper deck

The second level at the Greensboro Coliseum was so sparsely populated during the afternoon session for big post-expansion draws like Boston College and Miami, they could have dropped the Black Curtain of Hockey Doom and no one would have noticed.

After last year's half-empty Georgia Dome and this year's echo chamber, the ACC is learning the hard way: If you live by the Wu Tang philosophy (Cash Rules Everything Around Me), you die by it.

Wake Forest

Coach Dino Gaudio, 0-4 in the postseason, is truly a magician. He turned Frank Haith into John Wooden.

Meanwhile, "star" sophomore Al-Farouq Aminu, with three field goals and four turnovers, fared as well as John Mayer at a Simpson family reunion.

It was an afternoon for the unsung and unheralded - and we're not talking about Virginia and Miami posting upsets despite their combined 9-23 ACC record.

Sammy Zeglinski, Reggie Johnson and DeQuan Jones are about as far as it gets from household names - two sophomores and a redshirt freshman who are role players on their own teams - but they owned the Greensboro Coliseum on Thursday.

Zeglinski led Virginia with 21 points, more than 12 above his average, and Johnson and Jones - averaging a combined 10.8 points going into Thursday - posted 36 against Wake Forest.

Beware of Lewis Witcher, Xavier Gibson and Ersin Levent today.

Coachspeak-to-English translation

"We weren't as alert as we needed to be on the defensive end." Sleepy Boston College coach Al Skinner after the Eagles' 68-62 loss to Sylven Landesberg-less Virginia.

Translation: We weren't as ... zzzzz ... awake ... zzzz ... as we needed to be.
