Sophomore Ainsley Baker scored a career-high five goals, including the game-winner in overtime, to lift eighth-ranked Virginia to an 13-12 victory over previously unbeaten and third-ranked North Carolina in women's lacrosse at Charlottesville, Va.

North Carolina (6-1, 1-1 ACC), got four goals from Becky Lynch and three from Laura Zimmerman.

Virginia (4-2, 1-1) got three goals from Charlie Finnigan.

Duke 10, Georgetown 8: The host Blue Devils (7-1) jumped to a 6-1 lead and held fifth-ranked Georgetown (2-2).

Junior Christie Kaestner scored three goals to lead the Blue Devils and added an assist. Sarah Bullard had two goals and two assists.

Track and field

Duke's Beach sets record: Duke freshman Curtis Beach set a world-best in the 1,000-meter portion of the heptathlon at the NCAA Indoor Championships at Fayetteville, Ark.

Beach ran the 1,000 in 2:27.88, nearly five seconds faster than the second-place finisher. He finished 12th overall in the event with 5,533 points.

Oregon's Ashton Eaton took first with an indoor record 6,499 points, while North Carolina's Mateo Sossah came in second with 5,886 points.

Falcons men second in Division II: St. Augustine's finished second to Adams State in the NCAA Division II Indoor Championship in Albuquerque, N.M. Adams State had 89, 17 ahead of St. Aug's.

Josh Scott led the Falcons on the final day of the event, winning the 200 (21.91) and 400 meters (46.05) in meet-record times. The Falcons men also won the 1,600-meter relay in 3:11.80.

The St. Aug's women were sixth with 27 points. Lincoln (Mo.) won with 56 points.

The Falcons' Barbara Pierre was second in the 60-meter dash (7.81 seconds) and third in the 200 (23.82).

Men's lacrosse

Duke 8, Loyola (Md.) 5: Max Quinzani scored four goals and Ned Crotty had one goal and four assists as the Blue Devils (3-3) topped host Loyola.

Softball

N.C. State 4, Delaware State 3 (8): Stephanie Call doubled in Katie Mansilla in the top of the eighth to lift the Wolfpack (14-9) past Delaware State (6-3) in the Winthrop Invitational at Rock Hill, S.C.

State's Lindsay Campana (9-3) finished with a career-high tying 14 strikeouts.

Breanna Andrews hit two home runs, including the first of her career, for the Pack.

North Carolina 5-1, Florida State 0-2: Brittany McKinney's two-run home run in the top of the eighth ignited a five-run inning as the No. 18 Tar Heels (17-5, 1-1) won the opener and went on to split a doubleheader at Florida State (22-3, 1-1).

Danielle Spaulding (8-2) pitched her sixth shutout of the season in the opener.

Men's tennis

Pack coach notches 100th: Jon Choboy picked up his 100th win at N.C. State when the host Pack (10-2) topped William & Mary 5-2. NCSU also beat Norfolk State 7-0.
