The white perch, a semianadromous fish, migrates from brackish to fresh water to spawn and has been thick on the Roanoke River, near Weldon, lately. The fish prefer large, low-salinity sounds such as Chesapeake Bay and Albemarle Sound, and they also thrive in coastal rivers, lakes, ponds and some inland reservoirs such as Jordan Lake. Spawning in North Carolina usually takes place in April and May.
