Free Electric State is a rock band in the high-volume sense of the term, playing extremely loud music that you'll feel as well as hear. That might seem surprising in light of the '80s-style synth-pop that David and Shirle Koslowski played in their previous band, Gerty. But this is really where their hearts lie.

It started a few years back with a reunion of Liquor Bike, a Baltimore band that David Koslowski used to play in. Letting the feedback fly got him thinking in that direction again.

"Playing loud and rocking again, making noise, using the amp as another instrument - that was really fun," he says. "It made me think, 'Wow, why didn't I do this earlier.' It also made me want to turn up the volume some more."

So the Koslowskis have done just that with Free Electric State, although vestiges of their pop past do remain. The group's debut album "Caress" brings the noise, but with room for hooks.

"There are still pop songs under there," David says. "Gerty was a pop band because Shirle just can't help but write a vocal hook. It's in her nature. Even when she was playing in a riot-girl band, she was catchy."
