Nancy Caroline Hern, 84, a resident of Glenaire Retirement Community since 1992, died March 18, 2010. She was born on September 3, 1925 in Greensboro, NC to Louise (Pickle) and John Blake Hunter. Nancy graduated with a B.S. degree from Duke Nursing School in 1948. For 23 years, she was a foreign missionary in the Middle East with the IMB. She worked as an ESL teacher and tutor. Nancy was very involved in Glenaire Retirement Community. She loved volunteering, gardening and especially spending time with her family and friends.
She is survived by daughters, Vera Hern of Indian Trail and Louise E. Smith (Andy) of Raleigh; daughter-in-law, Colleen M. Hern of Spicer, MN; grandchildren, Brady Hern and Ben Dale; and sister, Nell Myers of Scottsdale, AZ.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William O. Hern; son, Bill M. Hern; and 4 brothers, J.B., David, Robert and James.
A service to celebrate Nancy's life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, March 22, 2010 at Glenaire Auditorium. The family will welcome friends at a reception in the Rotunda following the service.
