You learn such interesting things by reading The N&O. On Saturday, I learned that dental coverage was included in the health care reform bill currently being debated by Congress. Funny, I worked for federal and state government for more than 40 years and have never had dental insurance. Looks like those being subsidized by taxpayers are going to get better coverage than those who have worked since John F. Kennedy issued his challenge in the early '60s.

I've asked three questions of my congressman and senators:

1. What is "reasonable"?

2. What will this insurance cover? Insurance is worth nothing if the copays and deductibles exceed the cost of service.

3. How much extra tax will I be paying?

To date, I have received no response to those questions.

The Jan. 26 letter pertaining to the suicide of a former Dorothea Dix Hospital patient ("Dix priorities") only emphasizes the need for services lost when Dix closed in 2010.
Party paradigm
Omar Ali and Donna Moser deserve the gratitude of unaffiliated voters statewide for their Jan. 25 Point of View piece, "Declaration of the independents." I can't thank them enough for the lucid exposition of sentiments shared with so many of us.
School barriers
There is little to misunderstand when it comes to using taxpayer dollars to create de-facto private charter schools. Despite claims of innovation, the proposed Research Triangle High Schools (RTHS) relies on the time-honored tricks of segregation.
Harder to vote
The writer of the Jan. 31 letter "Nothing to hide" was wildly off the mark. The argument against voter ID laws has nothing to do with people being afraid or unwilling to show their picture IDs to vote.
Give them liberty
Triangle area cities and towns should stop making excuses and standing in the way of innovative ideas and progress.
A phantom phrase
I nearly burst a lung reading a column about the Duke-Carolina game Feb. 8 even though I've never smoked a cigarette in my life. And I grew up in Eastern North Carolina, land of the golden leaf.
