Many thanks for Derrick Jackson's sobering Other Opinion column March 18 on graduation rates among contenders in the NCAA tournament. It leads one to think that the valiant struggle of Bill Friday and Father Hesburgh for the integrity of student athletes has been fruitless.

Why cannot the NCAA rule that no team can go to the national tournament with a graduation rate under 50 percent? That is a fairly low bar but would give some objective assurance that there are a few student athletes left.
