Two teenagers drowned when their car hydroplaned in Monday morning's heavy rain and was submerged in a Johnston County swamp.

Killed in the early morning accident were Christopher Paul Kosmos, 18, of Angier and Alissa Chanette, 16, of Clayton, according to the state Highway Patrol.

The two were students at West Johnston High School.

The single-vehicle accident occurred just before 7 a.m. at Steel Bridge Road, near Lee Road, about two miles south of Clayton, the patrol reported.

According to troopers, Kosmos was driving a white 1998 Chevy Cavalier on Steel Bridge Road in Clayton when the car hydroplaned and ran off the road into a ditch. The car then overturned and was submerged, with its wheels facing up, in the swampy area.

Chanette was found inside the car, with her seatbelt still on, while Kosmos' body was found this afternoon by the Johnston County Sheriff Department's swift water rescue team 150 feet away from the car.

The exact cause of the death of the two teenagers will be determined by a medical examiner.
