Courthouse traffic circle fully open

Published: April 15, 2010

— The traffic circle around the Chatham County Courthouse in downtown Pittsboro fully reopened to traffic Wednesday for the first time since a fire March 25nearly destroyed the building .

The circle had been partially reopened, but portions of it remained blocked as workers removed debris and salvageable materials from the building.

Local officials wanted to reopen the circle in part because of planned construction of a roundabout on N.C. 87 near the Chatham Community Library, where N.C. 87 and Old Graham Road meet.

County officials have vowed to rebuild the 129-year-old courthouse. Future rehabilitation work may require the traffic circle to be partially closed again, County Manager Charlie Horne said.
