DURHAM -- Traffic on Fayetteville Street in Durham will be re-routed this morning when N.C. Central University tries, for the second time, to relocate an aged church on its campus.

The Holy Cross Catholic Church was supposed to be moved last weekend to make room for a nursing building. The move took longer than anticipated, though, and the church has sat this week in the center of campus.

The church rests atop a platform on Nelson Street near the corner of Fayetteville Street. The two-block move up Fayetteville Street will begin about 6 a.m. Utility services will be turned off for about two dozen homes.

Fayetteville Street traffic will detour one block west to Concord Street between Nelson and Lawson streets.

The church will eventually be placed next to the James E. Shepard House on Fayetteville Street.
