BENSON -- Look out, Knightdale can do a little more than sprint these days.

The Knights displayed their usual sprint dominance in Wednesday's Greater Neuse River 4-A Conference track and field championships and added production in the middle and longer distances. That gave Knightdale the boys team title with 160 team points, 39 more than runner-up West Johnston.

"In the past, it's just been about sprint, sprint, sprint, sprint, sprint with us," Knights coach David Castell said. "But after the indoor season, we really started working on building up our distances and becoming a little more versatile in what we can do."

State power Southeast Raleigh won the girls' team championship with 164 team points, 29 ahead of runner-up West Johnston.

Clayton junior standout Keni Harrison was chosen the girls meet MVP after winning the 100- and 300-meter hurdles and totaling 36 points individually. The Comets finished third in the girls team standings with 129 points.

Southeast's boys team, with 117 points, took third behind Knightdale and West. The Bulldogs' standout jumper -- Steven Bell-- was the boys' meet MVP, scoring 28.5 points individually. Smithfield-Selma's Henry Johnson cleared 13 feet to win the boys pole vault.

Balance and depth helped carry the Knights in the boys' meet, but sprinter Mar-Keo Jones shined individually, winning the 100-meter dash and the 200. Jones won the 100 in a hand-timed 10.44 seconds and topped the 200 field in 21 seconds flat.
