Transfers a rarity for UNC's Williams

Published: May 6, 2010

North Carolina has not yet confirmed the impending transfers of forwards David and Travis Wear. But when it does, it will mark a fairly rare occurrence for coach Roy Williams.

During his radio show last season, Williams said he's had only a half-dozen players transfer during his head coaching career (including Alex Stepheson, who left UNC for USC after the 2007-08 season).

"I’m really fortunate,'' Williams said during the radio show. "I’ve been a head coach for 22 years and I think that we figured it out that we’ve had six guys transfer in 22 years. Two of them came as walk-ons and I told them it was going to be very difficult for them to play to begin with and they just wanted to be a part of our program. They ended up transferring to a Division II school. But I still count them in our six even though I told them right up front.

Two other kids that transferred, one of them tried to come back on two different occasions and I didn’t take him. And then the fourth one that did transfer, he didn’t have a choice. He had a geography problem – he couldn’t find the classroom quite enough

"… You have to be honest with the kids and you have to tell them up front and then do what you say.”
