RALEIGH -- Virginia Tech football coach Frank Beamer was forced to cancel a golf outing with Triangle Hokie Club members today at Raleigh Country Club.
The cancellation came after Beamer’s wife, Cheryl, suffered serious injuries during a fall Tuesday at the couple’s lake house near Greensboro, Ga.
Virginia Tech sports information director Dave Smith said the fall occurred when Mrs. Beamer tripped over a family pet while carrying one of the couple’s grandchildren. She underwent surgery to have pins inserted in both legs but also suffered six broken ribs and a broken collarbone, Smith said. The child was not seriously injured.
“It’s my understanding that with the child in her arms, Cheryl didn’t have a way to brace herself for the fall,” Smith said.
“Obviously, Frank and the family are very concerned and he has canceled everything on his schedule for awhile.”
Smith said he didn’t know yet where the surgery took place or when Mrs. Beamer might be released.
“I think it could be as early as Friday, but that’s subject to change, I’m sure,” Smith said.
The mishap came only two weeks after Beamer sustained injuries during a fall while exiting an airplane in Blacksburg, Va.. He ruptured the distal tendon in his right biceps and is expected to undergo surgery to repair the damage this summer.
T
he Hokies, always among the favorites to win the ACC title, are scheduled to open the season on Monday, Sept. 6 against Boise State at FedExField near Washington, D.C.
Beamer’s team is coming off a 10-3 (6-2 ACC) season that concluded with a 37-14 win over Tennessee in Atlanta's Chick-fil-A Bowl.
