From Staff Reports

Police have released the name of a 19-year-old Raleigh man who was seriously injured this morning after he stepped off a city bus and into the path of oncoming traffic on Capital Boulevard.

Emergency workers transported the man, Rayshawn Lee Cooper of 4151 White Kestrel Drive, to WakeMed in Raleigh, according to an accident report made public this afternoon. Cooper is in critical condition, a hospital spokeswoman said just after 1 p.m. today.

Cooper was struck by a 2006 Ford driven by Andy Thein Tran, 49, of Raleigh, just after 10 a.m., police reported. No charges have been filed

The accident occurred in the 3900 block of Capital Boulevard near the intersection of New Hope Road, police reported.

Police say Cooper had not been a passenger on the CAT bus that he stepped off.

"Apparently he got on the bus to ask the bus driver about a destination," Sughrue said. "The bus driver told him to catch another bus that was going northbound on Capital."

According to the wreck report, Cooper got off the city bus and darted into traffic. He was struck by the Ford as it passed the stopped city bus. The posted speed limit for that section of Capital is 45 mph. The Ford was traveling at 55 mph when it struck Cooper, according to the accident report.
