I laughed when I read Wake County school board member Deborah Prickett's quote, "This is the first time in a long time we have had family friendly reassignments," in the June 2 article regarding Wake's diversity policy. It has not been so friendly to our family and Prickett has ignored at least three requests for help.
When reassignments were announced in January, my children were reassigned to year-round schools (Mills Park Middle and Alston Ridge). Per the instructions, we took no action as we were satisfied with the assignments.
Then the board switched Mills Park Middle to traditional, with no instructions on what to do if we were now unsatisfied. Because my son is only in first grade and ineligible for grandfathering, we had to apply for a transfer - to the same school he currently attends, two minutes from our home. His new school is 15 minutes away. Our application was denied and we must now appear before the board.
