DURHAM -- City Councilman Eugene Brown has his dander up over the Human Relations Commission's suggestion the city halt official travel to and business with Arizona.

"This is just something that gets under my craw," he said this afternoon.

Last week, the commission approved a resolution calling for the city ban to protest Arizona's requiring police to check the immigration status of any persons who look suspicious. It's been added to the agenda for Thursday's City Council work session.

"This sort of thing just drives me nuts. We've got more important work to do," Brown said.

Thursday's agenda already had 38 items for the council's consideration, including the 2010-11 budget and 2011-16 capital-improvement program.

"I think it's absolutely ridiculous," Brown said. "Here we are, right in the middle of our budget sessions and they want to bring in something like this that's so emotional, that really isn't our responsibility. It's a federal government responsibility.

"Not a whit of difference will this make."
