The members of the new Wake County school board majority, most of whom have little experience in education, now want to hire a superintendent who has little experience in education. Their supporter Russell Capps wants them to hire a businessman because the school system is "the largest business in Wake County." Capps and the board majority do not understand that the mission of a business and the mission of a public school system are totally different. The mission of a business is to make money. The mission of a public school system is to educate children.

The new school board majority was installed by powerful political forces for the purpose of weakening the public schools, to the benefit of private, religious and charter schools. I hope the new board members figure this out and change course before they succeed in carrying out this purpose. The loss of Wake County's strong school system will damage our children and our community for generations.

Matthew Brown,

Raleigh
