From staff reports

The Raleigh Fire Department has been awarded a federal grant of nearly $146,000 for the purchase of a mobile, 40-foot live-fire training simulator.

U.S. Rep. Brad Miller will present a check for the grant to Raleigh Fire Chief John McGrath, Mayor Charles Meeker and City Manager Russell Allen at 11:30 a.m. Monday at Raleigh Fire Station #1, 220 S. Dawson St.

The grant comes from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security as part of its Assistance to Firefighters Grant program, which requires a 20 percent local funding match. The program is designed to help emergency responders get equipment, protective gear, emergency vehicles, training and other resources.

The simulator will give firefighters live-fire training and have stations in ventilation, forcible entry, sprinkler, confined space, firefighter survival, and self-contained breathing apparatus.
