Thank you for the uplifting stories about our amazing Wake County high school and college graduates. Students inspire us by spreading hope and encouragement to the 140,000 Wake students who follow in their footsteps.

As we move into the 21st century, our Board of Education holds in its hands the future of all our children's education. Our current U.S. economic crisis holds challenges for graduates and our Wake leaders. The school system has a monumental budget shortfall. It's of great concern when hundreds of thousands of dollars are being spent on changes in assignments, security, attorneys, consultants and headhunters.

The cost of spending may not affect my children, but it certainly will affect someone else's child. Everyone who lives here cares about the success of Wake County. As our graduates enjoy their summer, remember all it took to get them to this place: sustainable change, responsible spending, support, great teachers and goals, which include inclusive decisions to support all citizens who call Wake County home. We all rise (and can fall) together.
