From staff reports

RALEIGH -- The four civil rights advocates who were arrested at Tuesday night's Wake County School Board meeting will hold a news conference at 11:30 a.m. today.

The four speakers -- state NAACP leader the Rev. William Barber; the Rev. Nancy Petty, pastor of Pullen Memorial Baptist Church; activist and Wake Schools parent Mary D. Williams and Duke University professor and author Tim Tyson -- will appear at the event at Pullen, 1801 Hillsborough St.

The protesters, refusing to leave the podium during a public comment period, were arrested, led away in handcuffs and charged with trespassing for what they termed an act of civil disobedience. They said they were protesting changes in school system policies about diversity under the board, which gained new leadership following fall elections.

School board chair Ron Margiotta said Tuesday that the protesters were given every opportunity to leave without facing arrest.
