From Staff Reports

An estimated 6,800 gallons of sewage spilled into creeks in Durham on Thursday and early this morning before crews were able to contain the spills, the city's Department of Water Management reported today.

The first spill dumped about 4,300 gallons of sewage into an unnamed tributary of Ellerbe Creek from a sewer at 1330 Maplewood Drive.

City crews cleared the blockage, caused by grease and roots, by 9:50 a.m. Thursday, the department said.

The second spill came from a sewer at 12 Knob Court, the city reported. The blockage was caused by grease and dumped about 2,500 gallons of sewage into an unnamed tributary of Little Lick Creek.

City crews cleared the blockage by 1 a.m. today and were cleaning and disinfecting the area, the city reported.
