The Charlotte Observer

Carolina Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith broke his left arm Sunday playing flag football and has already had surgery to insert a plate.

Smith was reaching for a pass that went over his head and when he fell tried to catch himself with his left arm, breaking a bone near the same area where he broke the arm late last season against the New York Giants.

Smith's agent, Derrick Fox, said that after consulting with team doctors Sunday, the decided to go ahead with surgery Sunday night. Smith's availability for training camp isn't done. The Panthers are done with football activities until their July 26 reporting date for training camp, he has time to heal.

Smith should miss the start of training camp, the agent says, but should be available for the season opener on Sept. 12, at the New York Giants.
