The slapdash manner in which the Wake school board majority is working to overturn our nationally recognized socioeconomic diversity policy is an affront to the basic moral sense of this community.
The heroic stand of William Barber, Nancy Petty, Tim Tyson and Mary Williams on June 15 should serve to galvanize further those of us who understand that the board majority's decisions are being driven by private, not public, interests. The board is moving as fast as it can with utmost secrecy and a blatant disregard for opposing views toward a vision of a school system that will be left in such disarray that vouchers will seem like the only solution.
Make no mistake. Chairman Ron Margiotta also sits on the board of Thales Academy in Apex, a private school whose founder, Bob Luddy, was the largest contributor in last fall's school board elections. The only folks who stand to profit from the further decline of the Wake County public school system are now in the driver's seat, and they are steering us off a cliff.
